Scientists have created the world's first synthetic life form in a landmark experiment that paves the way for designer organisms that are built rather than evolved.

The controversial feat, which has occupied 20 scientists for more than 10 years at an estimated cost of $40m, was described by one researcher as "a defining moment in biology".

Craig Venter, the pioneering US geneticist behind the experiment, said the achievement heralds the dawn of a new era in which new life is made to benefit humanity, starting with bacteria that churn out biofuels, soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and even manufacture vaccines.

Thailand rejects protesters' UN-backed talks plan

Thai officials have ruled out UN-backed mediation in an increasingly violent dispute with anti-government protesters on the streets of Bangkok.

A protest leader suggested the talks, but a government spokesman was quick to rebuff the offer, saying outside groups should not interfere.

At least 31 people have died since Thursday, when soldiers and police moved in to shift the demonstrators.

The protesters, known as red-shirts, have been camped in Bangkok for months.

They want Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to resign and call a new election.

A red-shirt leader, Nattawut Saikua, said protesters were willing to hold UN-moderated talks to end the stand-off, providing that the army withdrew from the area around the red-shirt camp.

But government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn insisted that no outside help was needed.

"We reject their demands for UN mediation... No Thai government has ever let anyone intervene with our internal affairs," he said.

A state of emergency has been declared in more than 20 provinces across the country - mostly in the protesters' northern heartlands - in a bid to stop more demonstrators heading to the capital.

Officials have urged women and older people to leave the protest zone by Monday afternoon, and have asked for help from the Red Cross.

About 5,000 people remain in the encampment, where food and water are running low amid a blockade on the area.

Sporadic clashes were reported on Sunday, but not on the same scale as previous days.

The BBC's Rachel Harvey says streets around the protest area are littered with fires; thick black smoke is rising into the air.

She says the pattern of demonstrations is that the protesters set up a disturbance and fires in one area, and the troops try to gain control of that area - then the demonstrators move somewhere else.

The latest fighting flared on Thursday, as the army and police moved to isolate a fortified protest camp.

Thousands of demonstrators remain behind makeshift barricades of rubber tyres, sandbags and bamboo stakes in the Ratchaprasong commercial district.

Mr Abhisit has declared Monday and Tuesday as public holidays and delayed the start of Bangkok's school term, but a planned curfew was cancelled.

Army 'prepared'

On Saturday, Mr Abhisit said the army would not back down in its operation to clear the protesters.

"We cannot leave the country in a situation where people who don't obey the law are holding hostage the people of Bangkok, as well as the centre of the country," he said.

Mr Abhisit and security officials have insisted that their operations against the protesters have targeted armed "terrorists" who they say have infiltrated the protesters.

Earlier, the army declared "live-fire zones" in some areas as it attempted to cut off the camp from supplies and reinforcements.

US-based Human Rights Watch warned that the zones had set the Thai authorities on a "slippery slope" towards serious human rights abuses.

More than 200 people have been injured since Thursday, and 27 people have been sent to jail, each given six-month sentences. All the fatalities have been civilians.

The clashes have raised questions about the stability of Thailand, South East Asia's second-largest economy.

Many of the protesters are from poor rural areas in northern Thailand where support is still strong for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 coup.

Mr Thaksin has called on the government to withdraw troops and restart negotiations. He is living abroad to avoid a jail term on a corruption conviction.

After two false starts, engineers successfully inserted a narrow tube into the damaged pipe from which most of the oil is leaking.

“It’s working as planned,” Kent Wells, a senior executive vice president of BP, said at a briefing in Houston on Sunday afternoon. “So we do have oil and gas coming to the ship now, we do have a flare burning off the gas, and we have the oil that’s coming to the ship going to our surge tank.”

Mr. Wells said he could not yet say how much oil had been captured or what percentage of the oil leaking from a 21-inch riser pipe was now flowing into the 4-inch-wide insertion tube. “We want to slowly optimize it to try to capture as much of the oil and gas as we can without taking in a large amount of seawater,” he said.

So far, the spill has not spoiled beaches or delicate wetlands, in part because of favorable winds and tides and in part because of the use of booms to corral the oil and chemical dispersants.

The capture operation on Sunday was the first successful effort to stem the flow from the damaged well, which has been spewing oil since a rig exploded on April 20 and sank.

The announcement by BP came on the heels of reports that the spill might be might much worse than estimated. Scientists said they had found giant plumes of oil in the deep waters of the gulf, including one as large as 10 miles long, 3 miles wide and 300 feet thick.

BP officials pointed out that even if the tube was successful, it was only a stopgap measure. The real goal, they said, is to seal the well permanently.

Preparations continued on Sunday on a plan to pump heavy drilling mud into the well through the blowout preventer, the safety device at the wellhead that failed during the accident.

In the procedure, called a top kill, the mud would be used to overcome the pressure of the rising oil, stopping the flow. The mud would be followed by cement, which would permanently seal the well.

Mr. Wells said Sunday that BP was a week to 10 days away from trying the maneuver.

The mud would be pumped from a drill ship, the Q4000, that is in place on the surface. Mr. Wells said the ship had more than 2 million gallons of mud on board — far more than needed — to pump into the well, which had reached about 13,000 feet below the seabed when the accident occurred.

In a brief interview, Mr. Wells said that a “junk shot,” an effort to clog the blowout preventer with golf balls and other objects before the mud is used, was still a possibility.

But in an apparent indication of the tube’s success, BP was already building a backup version.

The tube is basically a five-foot-long section of pipe outfitted with rubber seals designed to keep out seawater, attached in turn to a milelong section of pipe leading from the drill ship to the seafloor.

It was one of several proposed methods of stanching the flow of at least 210,000 gallons of oil a day that has been threatening marine life and sensitive coastal areas in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. BP officials have emphasized that none of the methods have been tried before at the depth of this leak.

At the briefing, Mr. Wells was asked about reports from a research vessel that discovered the huge plumes of oil. He said that he did not know anything about them, but that the Unified Area Command, the cooperative effort involving BP and state and local agencies, was seeking more information.

The plume reports added to the many questions that have been raised about the amount of leaking oil, which many scientists have said is far higher than the official estimate of 5,000 barrels, or 210,000 gallons, a day. That estimate was reached using satellite imagery, flyovers and visual observation, company officials have said.

The reports also raised concerns about the use of oil dispersants underwater, which the Environmental Protection Agency approved on Friday after several tests. Normally, dispersants are used on the surface, and scientists have said that the effects of using them underwater are largely unknown.

Representative Edward J. Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts and chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment, criticized BP, saying it had failed to respond substantively to his requests for more information about how it had reached its estimate of how much oil is leaking. He also said the company had refused to engage independent scientists who might offer a better assessment of the amount.

“BP is burying its head in the sand on these underwater threats,” Mr. Markey said in a written statement on Sunday. “These huge plumes of oil are like hidden mushroom clouds that indicate a larger spill than originally thought and portend more dangerous long-term fallout for the Gulf of Mexico’s wildlife and economy.”

BP began trying to insert the tube on Friday, but an effort to connect the pipe leading from the drill ship to the tube failed and the device had to be brought back to the surface for adjustments.

“This is all part of reinventing technology,” Tom Mueller, a BP spokesman, said on Saturday. “It’s not what I’d call a problem — it’s what I’d call learning, reconfiguring, doing it again.”

Around midnight Saturday, the tube was reinserted and worked for about four hours before it was dislodged after being mishandled by the submersibles, Mr. Wells said.

“At that time, we were just starting to get oil to the surface,” Mr. Wells said.

The oil was going to the Discoverer Enterprise, a drill ship, which has equipment for separating water from oil and can hold about 5 million gallons of oil.

Though that attempt failed, it was important because it demonstrated that features designed to keep hydrates from forming were working, Mr. Wells said. Hydrates, icelike structures of methane and water molecules that form in the presence of seawater at low temperatures and high pressures, forced BP to abandon an earlier effort to corral the leak with a 98-ton containment dome.

No dentist can't ruin my weekend!

Happy Thursday!

My, a visit to the dentist is way too pricey... I just came back from the dentist, and for some reasons, I haven't seemed be able to be cavities-less at least onte time in my life. I'm not a big milk fan, and I once try to increase my consumption in dairies (cheese, but still had one cavity!

So I have to see the dentist again tomorrow, and once more on the weekend (Saturday at 10AM... talk about a great way to spend a weekend).

Since I'm in the subject, my teeth have been kinda sensitive these days. Cold air is hurting them.I looed on the internet (I guess I could ask my dentist... but I'm scared he will charge me more for consultation fees LoL) and apparently, one of the cause of sensitive teeth is teeth grinding. I know that I grind my teeth a lot when asleep. Family, room mates and my hubby have all told me I really need to get that checked out. Well I guess I should really look into it. I 'm looking into this mouth guard for grinding teeth...fun!

Anyhow, I am still looking forward to this weekend. This is my friend's 32nd birthday and we are going to a yummy seafood restaurant. I've seen their cold seafood plate for 2, and they are monstruous! On the pricey side, but heh, my tax return will be pretty big this year hehe. It's nice and sunny outside, I just hope the weather will be just as great this weekend!! Before I leave, this is a picture from the best mascara ever : Lancome Fatale Mascara. I just purchased it and I'm loving it! There's nothing better than new makeup :)

How to train your dragon, a review

I rate How to Train your Dragon 9.5/10. I may be somewhat generous but I don't care. Dreamworks Animation absolutely deserves it. This is the best animated movie I've seen in the last three years.

I find it hilarious compared to Avatar by James Cameron. I find the movie is so much better in terms the storyline and the development of the characters. The script was remarkable.

Nonetheless I found the visuals to be spectacular even without the 3D. It is so good, it feels like Pixar HAD to be involved :P. Is it possible that Dreamworks has finally figured this out? In several sequences just like when I watched UP (my favorite last year film), I felt like it had to be written by animal-lovers because they show so much much comprehension on building the bonds between a man and an animal.

This bond between the kid and the dragon makes the movie so believable and I simply enjoyed every minute of How to Train your Dragon. "How to train your dragon" is brilliant and smart. My favorite scene : Toothless trying to force a smile. This film is a great movie for all kids and adults. I definitely recommend it.

But he is torn between his love for her and his helplessness for his family, stuck in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime. The story narrated the love and commitment of Anne Greves to her lover. To find him. Then to find him again. This is not a story of self-discovery. The story forces the reader to discover something about him or herself. The images are beautiful, deep. The images are horrible and haunting. I don't want to talk about it. I can't stop thinking about it.

To read and weep. Litterally.

Over the years, my fiancé has tried many different electric shavers. Sometimes, he loved them, but was mostly disappointed with the one he tried. Rash, skin cuts and pulled hair were part of the problems. While Norelcos used to be great electric shavers, the last Norelco triple-blade he trid was no good. Braun? Lot of money for top of the line electric shaver, with a way too long shaving time and too noisy shaver for an early morning! It was disappointment after disappointment... Until a friend swore he had the best electric razor ever. He recommended me to buy him the Panasonic Arc IV as a birthday present. This cool toy is very quiet, so quiet that my hubby sometimes says as a joke that he can ACTUALLY hear the stubble being shaved... :P Shaving is fast and takes only takes 5 1/2 minutes (I know this, because 1)the shaver has a timer 2)I time him when we are late:)). The shaver can simply be cleaned in its stand. Make sure to clean the shaver a couple times a week to keep it like new. The shaving is so smooth and my fiancé does not need to press it hard on his face to get it to shave close. As a matter of fact, the head springs loaded, giving the head the correct amount of pressure. The cleaning cartridges are not cheap though, and go for about 3/$12.70 on Amazon, which adds up quickly over time. But the cost of the cleaning cartridges and the electric razor are totally worth it, as his face feels shaved even after 8 hours, which is nice when we kiss :).

T veterans return to their home festival

Franz Ferdinand drew a huge crowd for their triumphant return to the Main Stage at T In The Park (July 10).

Kicking off their crowd-pleasing set with 'Do You Want To', guitarist Nick McCarthy strutted around in sequinned trousers as frontman Alex Kapranos raised his arms to the thousands who gathered to see the T veterans play.

The Scottish art-rockers were clearly enjoying themselves as they tore through tracks from their extensive back-catalogue of hits including 'Ulysses' and 'Michael', barely pausing for breath between songs.

"Take a minute to absorb what's around you," said Kapranos. "This is really a beautiful site", he added before launching into 'Dark Of The Matinee' which saw people far up the hill pulling shapes and dancing.

The crowd reserved most of their energy for 'Take Me Out', which saw the whole crowd bouncing to every beat and singing back every word in unison.

Ending their set with the epic disco of 'Lucid Dreams', the band walked off stage one by one until only drummer, Paul Thomson was left when he proceeded to make the ecstatic crowd dance one last time to the beat of his drums.

It works great... better than shaving with a manual shaver!! I used to wax... but it takes so much time sigh...

My name is Bon Ty Bahr... Because of the resemblance, my friends nicknamed me Bounty Bar heeheehee.. I have no idea what I will write here yet... I guess a lot of blabbing!!

Why not introduce you to my puppy, Dyno, he is now a 9 months english bulldog pup. He was and still is the cutest thing ever, I am so happy I got him =) He keeps me company ALL THE TIME. He follows me around in the house and is always looking to see what I am up to.

If you have an english bulldog, don't hesitate to comment on my wall, I would love to see pictures of your puppy too!!
